I began studying the work of Claude Monet and the Pointillists as a graduate student working in experimental video. The way both video and photography reproduce color is by filtering the visible light spectrum into color bands and modulating the amount of each color component so as to produce a spot of color. This dot is the symbolic representation of the light wave phenomena at that point. The dots are aligned so as to produce areas of color which give the impression of the original scene. I became fascinated by the deconstruction of a scene into these tiny components as practiced by Monet, Seurat and, later, printing and most forms of image reproduction. As a motif for studying this phenomenon I chose the water lily pond because of the abstract ambiguity of their reflective context. I suspect Monet was attracted to this subject for the same reason. This series is my homage to the vision of Claude Monet and the Pointillists.
